The Brooklyn Center for Digital Creation is a cultural center/art factory which contains living and working spaces, offices, studios, exhibition, shops, concert hall, library, cinema, with a focus on the digital world. Since the center does not care about what is created but about how it is created, new possibilities of synergetic effects are possible.
The BCDC not so much a building but a fragment of an artificial landscape including the possibility of being perpetuated more or less coherent throughout the quater, the city or even further.

Not knowing what kinds of buildings the Paper-Crease method can produce and which of them plays the most on the capabilities of the method, a bandwidth of phenotypes were produced. Eventually they evolved to a final Version combining urban intention, spatial layout, appeareance, usability,… .


The Paper-Crease Operation is a form-finding method which can be implemented digitally as well as physically. This is a set of configurations of physical models made of adhesive foil and polycarbonate/cardboard plates. This way spacial and formal potentials of the method can be explored quickly and intuitively.

This video shows how the Paper-Crease method is implemented in Rhinoscript. In this example the four corners of a flat origami folding pattern are moved and the pattern has to adjust (fold) according to the change in geometry.

The rigid origami tessellations are made of a specific folding pattern and an associated folding rule. Use the folding pattern and forget about the rule – the outcome looks and behaves like cloth or paper. I call it “Paper-Crease operation” when you create forms with this method.

Paper models of origami folding patterns. The objective was to analyze simple folding operations and their influence on the outcome. Rigid tessellations like these can be an approach to understanding the processes of chaotic folding.

The entire world is folded. Car crashes, insect´s wings, plate tectonics, tissue, protein folding even space and time are products of bending and folding. This means folding is one of the processes which generate the forms around us. Folding is connected to movement and stability. When matter is folding, it seeks stability by moving into a new shape.
